Herbert Montoya
Dialysis Patient, South Shore Dialysis Center

“I enjoy doing things with my children, and didn’t want dialysis to stop that.”

When Herbert Montoya was told he needed dialysis, he was afraid that he would have to give up what mattered most to him…spending time with his family.  With help from the people at South Shore Dialysis Center, Herbert’s learned how to live with dialysis.  “The people here are very nice; I know all of the doctors and nurses.  They talk to me, so I understand what’s going on with my treatment and my diet.  They help me to live my life.”

Herbert is 44, and has been on dialysis for the past 17 years.  During that time he’s raised three children, now ages 30, 28 and 18.  He cherishes taking his kids to the soccer field at Nassau Coliseum, to watch teams play from his native El Salvador.  “We go to the games, movies and restaurants.  I also like to go with them to the mall, or on long walks.  I enjoy doing things with my children, and didn’t want dialysis to stop that.”

The team at South Shore Dialysis Center is committed to providing Herbert, and all of our dialysis patients, with two things: quality of care and quality of life.  “They helped me realize that I had a different life now.  I have to be careful, and make sure I take my medicine and watch what I eat.  If you are careful, you can enjoy life and do the things you want.”
