John M. Ioannou, M.D.
“We need to give our patients energy, enthusiasm, hope and the most up to date medical care…so they can lead healthy and normal lives on dialysis.”
Dr. John M. Ioannou has been affiliated with South Shore Dialysis Center for over six years, and currently serves as one of the facility’s Attending Physicians.
Dr. Ioannou has been practicing medicine for over 11 years, and what sets him apart is his focus on the patient. “I give my patients the attention they deserve, and take the time to make sure they understand what’s happening with every aspect of their treatment.” This commitment to his patients means staying up to date on the latest advances in medicine and dialysis treatment. “Nephrology is constantly changing. I have a responsibility to keep updating my knowledge, and stay current on the best medical practices, so that I can give my patients the highest quality outcomes.”
Dr. Ioannou is a big proponent of the team philosophy we use at South Shore Dialysis Center. He gets to know his patients, as well as their families, in order to ensure the right care and treatment. “I give my patients a high level of care, and provide them with the tools they need to help themselves get better. Education is a big part of what we do. It’s making sure patients are compliant with their diet and medications, it’s setting goals and helping them understand how simple changes can have a big impact on their treatment and outcomes.”
In the halls of South Shore Dialysis Center, Dr. Ioannou is known for his positive outlook, and believes that the right attitude can play a big part in a dialysis patient’s treatment. “I try to bring a high level of energy and enthusiasm every day. When someone is told they need dialysis, they feel down and helpless. We need to give them care, hope and positive energy…and show them how they can live a healthy and normal life, even on dialysis.”
Dr. Ioannou is a graduate of the Sophie Davis School of Biomedical Education, an accelerated seven-year BS, MD program, and received his medical degree from the Mount Sinai School of Medicine. He completed his internship, residency and fellowship in Nephrology at North Shore University Hospital, where he was awarded the Teaching Fellow of the Year. Dr. Ioannou gives lectures at Hofstra University and South Nassau Community Hospital on state-of-the-art techniques in nephrology and renal physiology.
