Paul Friedmann, M.D.
“My patients do dialysis to live, they don’t live to do dialysis. Nothing stops them from doing what they want with their lives, including dialysis.”
Dr. Paul Friedmann has been affiliated with South Shore Dialysis Center for over 26 years, starting with us back when he was a Fellow, and currently serves as one of the facility’s Attending Physicians.
Dr. Friedmann has been practicing medicine for more than 25 years, and believes that individual care and the right attitude mean everything to dialysis patients. “I strive to provide the highest levels of individual care, tailored to the needs of each of my patients. The right treatment varies from case to case. To provide each of my patients with the best outcomes, you need to be on top of their lab results, medications, diet…all the details.”
Dr. Friedmann is a firm believer that the right mental attitude means everything, and a positive outlook leads to better outcomes and a better quality of life. “I want my patients to understand – they do dialysis to live, they don’t live to do dialysis. I try to optimize their psychological well-being as much as their medical well-being, and encourage them to live their lives to the fullest. I’ve had patients go on cruise ships, and take long trips to places like France, Ireland, Japan and China. Nothing stops them from doing what they want with their lives, including dialysis three times a week.”
Dr. Friedmann’s passion for details started in high school, when his chemistry teacher encouraged him to pursue medicine. He saw science as a way to make a difference in people’s lives. “Chemistry is the foundation, the building blocks for superior patient care. When you understand all of the facts and details of each patient’s case, you make better decisions about their care. When you can do that, you know that you’re able to help people by optimizing their medical condition.”
Dr. Friedmann is a graduate of Brooklyn College, and received his medical degree from Downstate College of Medicine. He completed his internship, residency and his fellowship in Nephrology at SUNY Health Science Center in Brooklyn. Dr. Friedmann provides medical expertise to a number of medical management and insurance companies, as an independent consultant in nephrology.
